TRENDING NOW: NCAA TRANSFER TRACKER / COLLEGE COACHING TRACKER
Three softball legends returned to the diamond this weekend, but about the only thing that stayed the same was the bright yellow ball.
Jennie Finch, Natasha Watley, and Lauren Chamberlain all participated in the Major League Baseball All-Star Celebrity Softball Game, as part of the MLB All-Star Festivities in Denver, Colorado. The game took place on Sunday night at Denver’s Coors Field and aired on television on Monday evening.
For the fifth consecutive year, Finch was listed as a team captain. She went up against Colorado Rockies legend Todd Helton in that category, and Helton’s squad of celebrities pulled out the 20-10 win. In a game where errors were not recorded, the teams also combined for 39 hits.
After this year’s loss, Finch is now 2-3 all-time as an All-Star Celebrity Softball Game team captain.
Chamberlain played on Team Helton in the game, while Watley was part of Team Finch, joining her former Olympic teammate once again.
Watley’s defense, perhaps her most well-known trait in the softball world, was on full display even in the laid-back Celebrity game. Watley had some nifty glovework in the game, including a side-flip on a hard-hit liner toward second base that recorded an out at second base. Watley also caught a pair of line drives on the fly, exhibiting one of the more sure-handed defensive efforts from either side in the game. Finch also got in on the defensive action later in the game, catching a popup over her shoulder while playing shortstop.
At the plate, Finch recorded an RBI double in both the first and fourth innings, driving in a run on both occasions and later scoring in the first. Chamberlain reached on an error in her team’s portion of the first and later flew out to deep left field. On a timed re-broadcast, only two of Chamberlain’s at-bats were shown on TV. Watley was 0-2 early in the game, but recorded an RBI double in the fifth and final inning and later scored a run in the same frame.
Other celebrity participants in the game included a number of musical artists and Denver-area professional athletes, as well as others like social media influencer JoJo Siwa and actor Anthony Mackie.
