College of Charleston head coach Linda Kalafatis earned her 1,000th career win on Saturday evening.
Kalafatis led the Cougars to a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State, giving the longtime head coach the milestone victory. The win moved the Cougars to 3-7 on the young season.
Now in her seventh season at the College of Charleston, Kalafatis owns 192 wins during her tenure leading the program, with the Cougars having reached the 30-win mark four times under her guidance.
“I’ve so enjoyed my time at the four universities I’ve coached at. I’ve had so many terrific players, some of whom are my best friends now,” Kalafatis said in a school statement after the win. “When I got into coaching I never thought I’d have a shot at this milestone. I took it game-by-game and year-by-year. It’s nice to look back on the great teams I’ve been a part of and the players who I’ve been able to coach.”
Prior to taking over the Cougars’ program, Kalafatis spent sixteen years as the head coach at Ohio State, and has also been the head coach at California University of Pennsylvania and Akron. During her lengthy tenure at Ohio State, Kalafatis earned more than 500 wins, with six NCAA tournament appearances and a Super Regional berth in 2009.
With the milestone victory, Kalafatis becomes the fourteenth active Division I head coach to reach the 1,000-win plateau.
