The Florida Gulf Coast League announced on Friday that the Anna Maria Aquanauts are the newest, and final, team set to compete in the league’s 2021 summer season.
With Friday’s announcement, the Aquanauts become the 10th league member team and the fourth new franchise set to debut in 2021. The South Bradenton Skeeters, Siesta Key Phinz, and Sarasota Circus are the other teams that will make their league debuts in the coming year.
After debuting as the inaugural summer league for collegiate softball players, the FGCL enjoyed success in 2020, capped off by an exhibition series against the USSSA Pride. In its inaugural year, the league drew talent from every level of college softball, from Division I Power Five teams to NAIA standouts.
The Aquanauts have not named a head coach for their inaugural season, but “roster announcements will be forthcoming,” according to a league press release.
