Chad Schatz, most recently an assistant coach at Detroit Mercy, died on March 29th following a battle with cancer. Schatz was 58 years old.

A graduation of Truman State University, Schatz spent a majority of his career coaching in his home state of Missouri. In addition to stints as an assistant coach at Missouri S&T and Columbia College, Schatz also spent a decade as an assistant coach at the University of Missouri. During his tenure, Schatz was part of a Big 12 championship-winning team and helped guide the Tigers to the Women’s College World Series.

Most recently, Schatz had been the pitching coach at Detroit Mercy for the past two seasons, and had to step away from his duties with the team last fall due to his battle. Under his leadership, the Titan pitching staff posted a 4.13 ERA during the 2017 spring season, a program-best mark in more than decade.

Schatz served as the head coach of the Bulgarian National Team since 2013 and led the team in the European Cup Games in 2013 and 2014.

Detroit Mercy head coach Jon Conway expressed his thoughts on Schatz in a statement released by the Titan softball program. “Throughout the years, [Schatz] has touched many lives as an instructor and as a coach,” Conway’s statement read, in part. “He truly cared about the players, both on and off the field. The softball community has lost one of its finest people and he will be missed by everyone.”

Services for Schatz were held on Monday morning,  April 2.
