In a surprising move, DePaul head coach Eugene Lenti has announced his retirement.
Lenti spent thirty-seven seasons as the head coach of the Blue Demons, a tenure that included a quartet of appearances in the Women’s College World Series, most recently in 2007. The Blue Demons’ best finish came in 1999, when Lenti’s club was eliminated in the semifinal round of the World Series.
A victor of more than 1,300 games, Lenti hit the magic #1300 earlier this year, in a shutout win over Presbyterian in February. Lenti’s only collegiate coaching job had been at DePaul, where he took the reins in the 1970s. After a brief break in the late 1980s, Lenti returned to the Blue Demons and had held the head coaching position ever since.
The Blue Demons earned their fourth consecutive NCAA tournament berth in 2018, though went 0-2 in the NCAA tournament at the Fayetteville Regional. The Blue Demons finished the season that would ultimately be Lenti’s last with a 35-17 record and a 15-3 conference mark.
Following the announcement of Lenti’s retirement, various media outlets confirmed that assistant coaches Lindsay Chouinard Platt and Lynsey Ciezki have been relieved of their positions. Both Platt and Ciezki were former Blue Demons softball players that had played under Lenti in the early to mid-2000s.
