Michelle DePolo has stepped down from her position as the head coach at Army, according to an announcement by the school late Monday evening.
DePolo spent nine years as the Black Knights’ head coach and led the program to the NCAA tournament via a Patriot League tournament title in 2012. She led the program to 39 victories in the 2016 season, the program record for wins in a single season, and was twice named the Patriot League’s Coach of the Year.
During her tenure at Army, DePolo also served as the program’s pitching coach and, in 2016, tutored Renee Poirier to the nation’s top mark in saves with eleven. The mark also set team and conference single-season records.
Prior to assuming the Black Knights’ program’s helm, DePolo’s coaching resume included a stint as an assistant at Army, as well as stints at Georgian Court University; Smith College; and Amherst College, working as the pitching coach in each spot.
A Georgian Court alum, DePolo played basketball and soccer, as well as softball, and led her team to a quartet of conference titles on the softball diamond. She was inducted into the program’s Hall of Fame in 2012.
The Black Knights ended the 2018 season with a 26-28 overall record, including a 10-8 mark in Patriot League play. Black Knights Senior Associate Athletic Director Bob Beretta has been named the program’s interim head coach and will serve in the role through the 2019 regular season. A search for a full-time replacement will begin at the end of the season.
