Pay a visit to the campus of Campbell University and you’ll come upon Amanda Littlejohn Stadium, the school’s softball facility.
The home of the Fighting Camels’ softball program – and the host of the most recent edition of the Big South conference tournament – the facility includes grandstands behind the plate that seat some 400 fans. But just who is Amanda Littlejohn, after whom this facility is named?
Littlejohn was the starting catcher for the Fighting Camels for a pair of seasons, including the 2008 campaign where she hit .367 with fifteen home runs and a single-season school record seventy-two RBIs. She helped lead Campbell to the program’s first NCAA tournament appearance in more than a decade that same season, and ended her collegiate career with a .296 batting average, 131 hits, 18 home runs, and 96 RBIs.
In addition to her on-field heroics, Littlejohn was twice named to the Atlantic Sun conference’s all-Academic team and was named an NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete in 2010.
After being diagnosed with melanoma in the summer of 2007, Littlejohn played that sensational 2008 season while bravely battling the disease. After fighting various forms of cancer for several years, Littlejohn lost her battle with the disease on September 1, 2011 at the age of 22, one day before her 23rd birthday.
The Campbell softball facility was dedicated to Littlejohn’s memory and named after her in a ceremony in April 2012.
