Who is she? Candyce Carter, a former outfielder for the Lamar Cardinals.
What is she known for? Carter was on the forefront of helping establish the Lamar program after its return from a years-long hiatus. After beginning her career at San Jacinto College, Carter spent the last two years of her career at Lamar. She earned all-conference honors in each of her two years in the Southland, serving as the Cardinals’ primary center fielder. At her career’s end, Carter’s name sat atop a pair of program records, including batting average and RBIs.
Here’s something interesting… Candyce is not the only collegiate athlete in her family; her father, Scott, played college baseball at Henderson State University, a Division II school in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Quotable quote: “The best piece of advice [that]I could give to the younger girls coming up through the travel ball and recruiting process is to thank your parents or your grandparents or whoever is putting all of the time and effort into allowing you to chase your dreams. It’s something I took for granted, and I believe most girls do, and if I could go back, I would have told them ‘thank you’ more often. So with that being said… thank you so much to Scott and Bridget Carter for putting countless hours and countless dollars into allowing me to become a Division 1 athlete.”
What’s she up to now? Following her graduation from Lamar, Carter entered the collegiate coaching world. She spent one year on staff at Louisiana-Monroe and a pair of seasons on staff at McNeese State. She earned her Master’s degree at McNeese, after which she accepted the head coaching position at Barbe High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Also a teacher at Barbe, the 2019-20 school year will mark Carter’s third at the high school level.
