Who is she? Maggie Tyler, a former pitcher for the Virginia Tech Hokies.
What is she known for? Tyler helmed the Hokies’ pitching staff for three seasons, leading the team in innings pitched and strikeouts in three consecutive seasons. At her career’s end, Tyler ranked third in program history in strikeouts, collecting more than 700 during her career in Blacksburg. In 2016, her senior season, Tyler was named to the all-conference first-team and also earned first-team all-region honors.
Here’s something interesting… During Tyler’s senior season as a Hokie, she unknowingly pitched with two torn rotator cuff tendons. After suffering one partial tear earlier in her career, Tyler was able to pitch with the injuries, but discovered the extent of the damage after her career ended and had surgery to, as she puts it, “put my shoulder back together.”
Quotable quote: {on what lesson has served her best in post-softball life] “Working hard and accepting that not everything is going to always be fun. My parents did a great job when I was a kid of not letting successes or failures get to my head, which prepared me for dealing with inevitable setbacks and struggles as an adult. There were plenty of times when I was playing that I’d have a bad game, or that training was tough – but it was worth it because I was playing the sport I love.”
What’s she up to now? Tyler began her post-college life as an intern in the Georgia Southern athletic department, a position that later transitioned into a full-time role. During her tenure, Tyler worked as a sports information director and in other capacities, including, at times, helping broadcast the program’s baseball and softball games. She currently holds the title of Director of Video Services at James Madison University, working with nearly two-dozen athletic teams and creating content that features members of the JMU athletic department.
