Springer began her career at UCF, spending her freshman season with the Knights in a year when the squad won the American Athletic Conference title and reached the NCAA tournament. She pitched sparingly during her single season as a Knight, to the tune of a 2.52 ERA in 16.2 innings of work, also contributing on offense with a .304 batting average and a home run in twenty-three at-bats.
After transferring to Ohio State, Springer was a three-year letterwinner for the Buckeyes, with a 20-13 overall record. She finished her senior season in 2017 with a career-high eight wins, a 2.74 ERA, and fifty-three strikeouts. She was a part of a pair of NCAA tournament teams during her team at OSU, playing a role in the Buckeyes reaching the tournament in 2016 and ’17.
In joining the staff at Delaware State, Springer will work under first-year head coach Jeff Franquet, who has a history with the Springer family: He coached Nicole Springer, Lena’s older sister, during her playing career at Central Connecticut State. Additionally, Springer’s brother is Houston Astros superstar George Springer.
Delaware State finished the 2019 season with a 10-32 overall record, including a 7-8 conference mark. The Hornets’ pitching staff posted a 7.05 ERA on the season, with sixty-seven strikeouts and an opponent’s batting average of .304.
