Former Kentucky great Abbey Cheek has been named an assistant coach at Morehead State.
Cheek graduated from Kentucky following the 2019 season, a season during which she was named the SEC Player of the Year. During her stellar senior season, Cheek was a top-10 finalist for the USA Softball National Player of the Year award and set the Kentucky program’s all-time home run record.
During the 2019 season, Cheek hit twenty home runs, finishing her career with sixty-one longballs, a total more than a dozen greater than the previous UK program record. She owns four single-season records for the Wildcats program, including on-base percentage and slugging percentage.
A former SEC all-freshman honoree, Cheek was unanimously elected as a first-team all-American following her senior year. She added all-conference, all-region, and SEC all-defensive team awards to her trophy case in 2019.
Morehead State finished the 2019 season with a 3-42 overall record, including a winless 0-20 showing in Ohio Valley Conference play. The Eagles recorded two victories over St. Bonaventure and a season-ending victory over Tennessee State. The squad finished the season with a .197 team batting average, while the pitching staff posted a 9.83 cumulative ERA.
