Michael Steuerwald has been hired as an assistant coach at Syracuse, the school announced on Wednesday.
Steuerwald spent the 2019 season on staff at Utah Valley and is currently the head coach of the Scrap Yard Fastpitch professional franchise.
In his single season on the Utah Valley staff, Steuerwald held the title of Associate Head Coach and helped lead the squad to a 7-11 conference record and a non-conference win over PAC-12 foe Utah.
Prior to his time at Utah Valley, Steuerwald spent time as an assistant coach at Elon and Rockford College, as well as head coach at Cuesta College in California. At the professional level, he spent a single season as an assistant coach with the Rockford Thunder of the National Pro Fastpitch league.
From 2010 to 2017, Steuerwald served as the head coach of the Chicago Bandits, also of the NPF. He led the squad to four league championships and twice helmed the NPF Coaching Staff of the Year. During his tenure with the Bandits, Steuerwald coached Syracuse head coach Shannon Dopeking, who was then a catcher for the professional squad.
Syracuse finished the 2019 season with a 21-32 overall record, including an 8-16 mark in conference play. The Orange posted a team batting average of .262 on the year, while the squad’s pitching staff posted a cumulative ERA of 4.71.
