Longtime San Diego head coach Melissa McElvain has resigned from her position with the Toreros.
McElvain’s tenure at San Diego came to an end as she stood just shy of the 400-win mark for her career. Entering the 2019 season, McElvain owned a 361-476 career record and led the Toreros to a 20-29 record during the regular season, including a 4-11 mark in West Coast Conference play.
The Toreros’ 20-win campaign in 2019 was the team’s lowest number of victories since 2008, but did continue an 11-year streak of recording at least twenty wins; the last time that San Diego did not win at least twenty games in a season was that ’08 year, when the Toreros went 16-40.
Prior to assuming the helm of the San Diego program, McElvain also worked in the school’s sports information department. An Oklahoma State alum, McElvain graduated from OSU in 1999 and was an all-conference honoree during her career. She ranked in the top twenty in program history in a number of statistical categories when she graduated, including hits, total bases, and RBIs. She was part of the Cowgirls squad that played in the 1998 Women’s College World Series.
