Former Utah backstop Kelly Martinez has transferred to Texas A&M.
Martinez left Utah earlier in the fall and originally transferred to Texas; she was seen, at one point, participating in a photo shoot with other incoming Longhorn transfers Miranda Elish and Lauren Burke. Her brief stint at Texas was not mentioned in the Texas A&M news release announcing her addition.
At Utah, Martinez earned all-PAC 12 freshman honors in 2017 and finished her two seasons in Salt Lake City with a .290 batting average and eleven home runs across her freshman and sophomore campaigns. She led the Utes program with five triples in 2018, and finished in the top three on the squad in doubles and runs scored.
In a message posted on social media, Martinez said, “Im (sic) so happy and excited to call College Station my home for the next couple of years! Thank you to every single person that has helped me get to this point in my career and I’m so thankful for all of the opportunities! #gigem”
The addition of Martinez is the first non-freshman addition to the A&M roster following a summer full of departures. The Aggies lost six seniors, including four offensive starters and two pitchers, to graduation; saw starting infielder Kaitlyn Alderink retire after her junior year; and endured the transfers of another four players, including two offensive starters and another pair of pitchers.
