The Delta State Lady Statesmen and the Valdosta State Blazers have been named the co-recipients of the inaugural JWOS D2 Team of the Week honor.
A week removed from their 4-1 start to the regular season that included an upset win over then-#5 Saint Leo, the Lady Statesmen began their week with another upset over a ranked team, taking down #12 Illinois-Springfield. Head coach Casey Bourgoyne-Charles and Co. continued their hot streak by soundly defeating reigning National Champions Southern Indiana by a score of 13-4. Though the Lady Statesmen ended the week with two losses in their six total games, the squad’s performance and general body of work was impressive.
Entering week two as the #22-ranked team in Division II, Valdosta State put together an impressive winning streak of their own that included three straight victories over higher-ranked teams. Facing #18 Palm Beach Atlantic, #2 Southern Arkansas, and #19 Lenoir-Rhyne, the Blazers beat the trio of programs by a combined score of 20-0, shutting out all three. A victory over Azusa Pacific (CA) and a tight 2-1 loss to Tampa finished the weekend for the club.
With their 4-2 showing on the weekend, Delta State moves to 8-3 overall, while Valdosta State’s 4-1 record gives them a 8-1 mark on the young season.
The JWOS D2 Team of the Week honor was created to highlight teams at the Division II level that record impressive performances and big victories. The award will be given out weekly throughout the Division II regular season.
