Eckelberry was struck head-on while driving late Friday night, and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to various reports. She graduated from Gannon in 2018, and spent four years as part of the Lady Knights’ softball program.
“Katie was such a tremendous individual who was committed to making a positive impact in the community,” Gannon athletic director Lisa Goddard McGuirk said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this difficult time.”
During her softball career at Gannon, Eckelberry was named an NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete and was awarded the NCAA Division II Athletics Directors Association Academic Achievement Award three times. She graduated cum laude in 2018.
