Kayla Lucas is no longer the head coach at Young Harris College, sources confirmed to JWOS early Friday.
No reason was immediately given for Lucas’ departure; Lucas declined to comment to JWOS. Assistant coach Jessie Homesley, who has head coaching experience at Christian Brothers University, is a likely bet to be named the interim head coach in Lucas’ stead.
Lucas finished her fifth season at YHC with the shortened 2020 campaign, and owns a career record of 173-78 during her tenure at the school. The Mountain Lions reached the NCAA National Tournament in each of her first four seasons at the helm, and played in the D2 national championship in 2019.
In that same 2019 season, Lucas and her coaching staff earned Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year honors from the NFCA, and finished the season as the #4 team in the nation.
Prior to her successful tenure at YHC, which also was the first head coaching position of her career, Lucas spent four years as an assistant coach at Georgia College, where she was named the Division II Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014. She helped lead the Bobcats to a trio of postseason appearances, including their first-ever Super Regional berth in 2015.
After beginning her playing career at Henderson State, Lucas later graduated from Central Baptist College, where she helped lead the program to the NCCAA National Championship in 2010. She stands in the top ten in CBC program history in ten statistical categories.
