Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs announced this week that he plans to step down from his position on June 1, 2018.
In his statement, Jacobs said that his departure could come even sooner if a successor is found and in place before next summer.
Jacobs has led the Tigers’ athletic department since December of 2004 and has spent more than three decades in several capacities across the school’s athletics program. He presided over the program’s first-ever BCS national championship in 2010, among other program successes.
On the softball side, Jacobs was responsible for firing former head coach Tina Deese in 2013, as well as hiring Clint Myers to replace her. Clint Myers was himself fired earlier this year amidst scandalous allegations that include lack of program oversight and helping cover up severe misconduct on the part of Clint’s son and former Tiger assistant softball coach Corey Myers.
Former James Madison head coach Mickey Dean was hired to replace Clint Myers in September, a move that could be, depending on the eventual final timetable of Jacobs’ move, the embattled leader’s final hiring in his current position for the Tigers.
The continuing investigation and scandal surrounding the softball program at Auburn is one of several currently confronting the Tigers athletic department; a lawsuit filed by a former baseball coach at the school and the continuing federal investigation that closely involves assistant basketball coach Chuck Person also head the list.
