Former Lamar outfielder Brittany Rodriguez has transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette for the 2018 season. Rodriguez, who spent two seasons at Lamar and will be a senior this coming season, will be eligible to play immediately.
Rodriguez earned first-team all-Southland conference honors in 2016 and 2017 and was named to the all-conference tournament team in her sophomore season of ’16. She hit .391 during her two seasons as a Cardinal and set a program record immediately in 2017 with seventy hits, a single-season’s best. She broke her own record in 2017 with eighty-one hits on the season.
Rodriguez figured prominently into the Cardinals’ plans in 2018, but Lamar coach Holly Bruder confirmed to JWOS that the outfielder was dismissed from her team for a violation of team rules. She declined to elaborate further, except to note that Rodriguez was granted her full release to play following her dismissal from the Lamar roster.
At Louisiana-Lafayette, Rodriguez is a high-profile addition to Gerry Glasco’s first roster as Ragin Cajuns head coach and figures to help solidify an outfield situation that was compounded by Aleah Craighton’s transfer to Arizona. Rodriguez is the second outfielder from Texas to transfer in this offseason, following former Texas Tech slugger Raina O’Neal.
Rodriguez and the Cajuns kick off the 2018 season on February 8 against Samford in their hosted Mardi Gras Classic in Lafayette.
