Oklahoma State standout Vanessa Shippy has been named the JWOS Player of the Year in the Big 12 conference. Shippy was joined by conference Pitcher of the Year Paige Parker (Oklahoma) and Jenae Jefferson of Texas, who was crowned Freshman of the Year.
Shippy led her squad with a .460 batting average and paced the conference with her .613 on-base percentage and sixty-five runs scored. Shippy earned a pair of conference Player of the Week honors during the year and collected four home runs and twenty-eight RBI on the season.
Parker led the conference with her 0.51 ERA in Big 12 games, holding opponents to just a .148 batting average. She posted a perfect 10-0 record versus conference opponents and averaged more than a strikeout an inning, allowing just four runs through her team’s entire conference slate of games.
In a narrow race for Freshman of the Year, Jefferson earned the award over Oklahoma’s Jocelyn Alo. Jefferson hit better than .500 in conference play, collecting thirty-two hits in sixty at-bats against Big 12 pitchers. Overall, including non-conference play, Jefferson collected twelve extra base hits and twenty-four RBI on the season, and struck out just four times, in contrast to twenty-four walks.
Gasso earned the Coach of the Year award after leading her team to the conference’s regular-season and tournament titles. The Sooners lost just three games on the season and were undefeated in conference play. Twenty-four of the team’s fifty victories this season came as they shut out their opponent, and Gasso led her club to nineteen run-rule victories.
