Savannah McHellon has been named an assistant coach at Alabama State, the school announced on Sunday evening.
McHellon spent her freshman year at Georgia before transferring to Northwest Florida State College, then later Fresno State for the final two years of her career. She played in twenty-eight games during her single year at Georgia, and was named a NJCAA All-American during her year at Northwest Florida. That season, she batted .405 with twenty-three home runs and posted a 1.054 slugging percentage and .571 on-base percentage. She also posted a 20-2 record in the circle, with a 1.50 ERA in twenty-nine appearances, with 180 strikeouts and three saves.
After transferring to Fresno State, McHellon earned an all-Region first-team nod in 2017, batting .282 on the season with ten home runs and forty-four RBIs; her home run and RBI totals led the team. She recorded a .386 on-base percentage and .537 slugging percentage that same season. A .288 hitter during her senior year, McHellon set her Division I career high with fourteen home runs, a mark that also tied for seventh all-time in the program’s single-season record books. She finished her playing career sixth in Fresno State program history with a .560 career slugging percentage, while her twenty-four home runs as a Bulldog rank eighth all-time.
Following her graduation from Fresno State in 2018, McHellon spent the 2019 season as an assistant coach at West Clovis High School in Fresno, California.
In joining Alabama State, McHellon is the first addition to the coaching staff of first-year head coach Todd Bradley, who will lead the Hornets as they look to build off of a 2019 season that saw them post a 24-25 overall record, with a 10-7 record in SWAC play, and the conference tournament championship en route to a berth in the NCAA regional round.
