Mississippi State’s Alex Wilcox has passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 18 years old.
Wilcox was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2015 and joined Mississippi State as a freshman outfielder for the 2018 season. Playing sparingly, as she continued to receive treatments for the cancer, Wilcox earned fifteen at-bats in eight games in her sole season as a Bulldog, collecting three hits.
The Brantley, Alabama native served as the inspiration for the “No One Fights Alone” campaign that took the SEC and the game of softball by storm as conference opponents and other teams strove to raise awareness for ovarian cancer. Wilcox’s Bulldog teammates led the way, wearing special teal uniforms and holding a moment of silence in midweek games throughout the season.
Other SEC programs joined the fight as the season continued, including teams that Mississippi State did not face. Wilcox was often the centerpiece of those efforts, as well, as teams specifically honored her fight. In-state rival Ole Miss wore Wilcox’s name on their helmets and pregame gear, while others donned bracelets including Wilcox’s name and the No One Fights Alone message.
Wilcox’s fight and spirit, even at such a young age, inspired countless individuals across the south and across the nation. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family, friends, teammates, and all who knew her.
