James Madison announced the addition of transfer pitcher Alexis Bermudez on Wednesday afternoon.
Bermudez, who entered the NCAA’s transfer portal in early August, heads to Harrisonburg with two years of eligibility remaining. She will join a Dukes pitching staff that includes reigning all-American Odicci Alexander; sophomore Isabel Kelly, who did not play in 2019; and fellow transfer Kayla Boseman, formerly of Mississippi State.
A native of Santa Fe Springs, California, Bermudez has a full trophy case from her two years at BCU, including being named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference’s Pitcher of the Year after the 2019 season. She was named the league’s Rookie of the Year in 2018, and helped lead Bethune Cookman to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances.
During her freshman season in 2018, Bermudez led the BCU squad with a 3.32 ERA and recorded thirteen victories. She finished second on the team with sixty-six strikeouts that year, while adding a .278 batting average in her own right at the plate, along with five doubles and nineteen RBIs. As a sophomore in 2019, the right-hander appeared in a career-high forty-eight games, posting a record of 15-22 and a 3.50 ERA. She led the conference in strikeouts with 168 and threw a pair of no-hitters on the year. Opponents hit .233 against her during her sophomore campaign, while she also earned all-MEAC tournament honors.
At James Madison, Bermudez joins a squad that is coming off of a Super Regional berth. The Dukes posted a 51-10 overall record during the 2019 season, including a 20-1 conference mark and a 7-3 postseason record that included an upset victory in the Ann Arbor regional.
