Hoerner will enter 2020 in her third season leading the Mountaineers’ program, and has collected an overall record of 48-60, with a 17-33 conference mark.
The Mountaineers finished the 2019 campaign with a 31-25 record, tying a program record for wins in a single season. The squad finished the year with a 13-13 mark against Sun Belt Conference opponents; that number also set a program single-season record.
During the postseason, Hoerner again led her team to a history-making moment, earning the #5-overall seed in the Sun Belt conference tournament, the program’s first appearance in the postseason since joining the league. The Mountaineers were later selected to participate in the National Invitational Softball Championship (NISC) postseason tournament.
“Shelly is a tremendous leader for our softball program,” App State Athletic Director Doug Gillin said in a statement. “The team’s progress in her two seasons as head coach is remarkable, and we look forward to our student-athletes’ continued pursuit of excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community.”
Prior to taking the helm at Appalachian State, Hoerner spent four years as the head coach at Georgia Tech. Her resume also includes stints as the head coach at College of Charleston, Barry University, and Valdosta State.
