TRENDING NOW: NCAA TRANSFER TRACKER / COLLEGE COACHING TRACKER
Athletes Unlimited has announced the signing of a trio of players, all of whom participated in the organization’s open tryouts in June.
Former Ohio State standout Lilli Piper, who participated in the league’s inaugural season last summer but had not been re-signed for season two, impressed league evaluators and has now gained a contract for the upcoming year.
Newly-graduated Illinois-Chicago infielder Kayla Wedl and ex-Drake pitcher Nicole Newman will make their professional debuts as they round out the list of signees following the tryout.
Wedl played her super-senior season at UIC this spring, earning her second consecutive Horizon League Player of the Year award. She led the conference in every major offensive category and finished her collegiate career second in program history in five statistical categories, including batting average (.378) and runs scored (202).
Newman was named a first-team All-American in her redshirt senior season at Drake in 2019. She earned her third Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year award that same season, leading the nation in strikeouts with 423. She spent the last two seasons on staff at Minnesota and was recently named an assistant coach at Creighton.
Piper played sparingly during her first season in AU, going 12-25 at the plate and notching two home runs, three doubles, six RBIs, and scoring nine runs, according to statistics registered on Athletes Unlimited’s official website.
The second season of Athletes Unlimited is set to begin on August 28th and will run through the end of September.
