Sharon Perkins has been hired as the head coach at Georgia Southern, the school announced on Saturday. The hiring of Perkins follows the departure of Kim Dean, which was announced on May 18th. On the collegiate level, Perkins was most recently the head coach at Georgia Tech, a tenure that ended in 2013. She has most recently coached in the travel ball and private lesson arenas. Perkins owns a career record of 290-138 at the collegiate level, which includes a 7-year tenure as head coach at Georgia Tech. Grand Canyon and head coach Ann Pierson have parted ways, the school announced on Friday. Pierson is the only coach that the Lopes have ever known, beginning the program in 2004 and guiding the squad through the transition from Division II to Division I. The Lopes collected a 509-419-3 overall record under Pierson’s shepherding; that mark includes ten years at the Division II level and the past eight years as a Division I program. Saint Francis (PA) head coach Jessica O’Donnell will not coach the Red Flash in the NCAA tournament. O’Donnell is expecting her first child, and was advised by doctors not to travel long distances so close to giving birth. The Red Flash earned the regional 4-seed at the Austin, Texas regional – some 1,500 miles from Loretto, Pennsylvania where Saint Francis is located. Mercer head coach Stephanie DeFeo has stepped down from her position, the school announced on Thursday. DeFeo had been the Bears’ solo head coach for five seasons, previously spending a handful of seasons as the co-head coach, and is the winningest coach in program history. She owns an overall record of 217-195 and is the only Bears head coach to cross the 200-win threshold. Two Division III teams are dealing with COVID-19 issues and their D3 tournament hopes are dashed, JWOS has learned. An official release from Salisbury University Tuesday discussed issues at Ohio Northern; both teams were set to participate in the Marshall, Texas regional hosted by East Texas Baptist. Instead, Ohio Northern has withdrawn from the D3 tournament due to COVID-19 protocol issues. The Polar Bears’ first-round matchup against Salisbury has been declared a no-contest and Salisbury will advance. Ohio Northern finished the season fourth in the OAC standings and 24-18-1 overall. He is also the chairperson and longest-tenured active member of the Division I Softball Committee; that’s the group charged with selecting and seeding every team in the 64-team NCAA tournament.
