Briana Carrera, a 2006 graduate of James Madison, passed away on June 9th.
On Twitter, JMU Softball remembered Carrera on Friday morning, posting, “The thoughts of JMU Softball are with the loved ones of Briana Carrera (’06), who passed away earlier this week after a long battle with lupus. Briana was a wonderful representative of JMU, throwing the program’s first-ever no-hitter and setting JMU’s career strikeout record.”
During her playing career for the Dukes, Carrera twice led her team in ERA and also twice batted over .300. As a junior in 2005, she led the squad in both categories, collecting a .328 mark at the plate and a 1.81 ERA in the circle. She finished her playing career as a .303 hitter, with one home run and 58 RBIs to her credit; in the circle, she notched 289 career strikeouts in 416 innings of work.
Carrera’s sister, Tamara, also played for James Madison, graduating from the program in 2007.
According to a GoFundMe page set up following Carrera’s death, she was diagnosed with lupus during her senior year at JMU and fought the disease for fifteen years. The GoFundMe page was set up to benefit the Lupus Foundation of America; to contribute, click here.
