Charline McCombs, a Longhorn State philanthropist and supporter of the University of Texas softball team, passed away on Thursday, according to media reports in San Antonio. She was 91 years of age.
McCombs, along with husband Billy Joe “Red” McCombs, were supporters of the University of Texas, and frequent supporters of the Longhorns’ softball program. In the late nineties, the Texas softball complex was dubbed “Red & Charline McCombs Field” after the couple’s generous support.
Red and Charline McCombs married in 1950, and were known as frequent philanthropists.
Former Longhorns head coach Connie Clark and current coach Mike White expressed their condolences following McCombs’ death.
“My heart goes out to Red and the family after hearing about the passing of Charline…an amazing women who was always sweet & sincere. Thank you for supporting our @TexasSoftball & RIP,” Clark wrote on Twitter.
“So saddened to hear about the passing of Charline McCombs. Texas softball is forever indebted to Charline, Red and their family for their contribution to UT athletics,” White also tweeted.
