Detroit Mercy head coach John Conway is in his final year as the Titans’ head coach and will retire following the 2019 season.
A university spokesperson confirmed on Friday that the 2019 season will be Conway’s last at the helm of the Titans, saying simply “This is Coach Conway’s final season. He is retiring at the end of the season.”
Conway is in his fifth year as the program’s head coach, having amassed a 59-143 record entering the 2019 season. Prior to this season, the Titans posted a winning record in conference play just once, with a 12-10 showing in Horizon League play in 2017.
The 2019 season has inarguably been the Titans’ finest under Conway’s leadership, as the squad sits at 23-23 through April 20th. With a 12-6 record in conference play, the Titans have already matched their previous high conference win total during Conway’s tenure as head coach.
Prior to being named the head coach at Detroit Mercy, Conway spent four seasons as the head coach at Division II Saint Leo, leading the Lions to the 2013 Sunshine State Conference championship. He was named the conference’s Coach of the Year that same season. His coaching resume also includes stints as a head coach at Saint Louis and Division III Fontbonne.
In addition to his collegiate coaching experience, Conway spent several years as a travel ball coach and was a member of the US Coast Guard.
