Detroit Mercy has found their new head coach, promoting Marc Gillis to the role.
Gillis spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach on the Titans’ staff, working with the program’s pitching staff. He helped guide the Titans to the 2019 Horizon League tournament championship and first-ever NCAA tournament berth, and shepherded Ashley Mauser en route to the senior being named the conference’s Pitcher of the Year in ’19.
Prior to joining the Detroit-Mercy staff, Gillis spent three years on staff at Michigan-Dearborn and spent nearly two decades in the areas of player evaluation and development, while also coaching at the Gillis USA Softball Training Academy for a portion of that time.
A former men’s fastpitch player, Gillis’ biography notes that he was a member of the only Michigan team to win the International Softball Congress (ISC) world championship and also is a former teammate of Texas head coach Mike White. Gillis is a member of the Saginaw County (MI) Sports Hall of Fame.
As part of the record-breaking 2019 campaign, Detroit Mercy finished the year with a 31-28 overall record, including a 16-8 mark in Horizon League play. The Titans went 4-1 in the conference tournament, including back-to-back victories over top-seeded UIC to clinch the tournament title. The squad ended the 2019 season with a .249 team batting average and 2.90 cumulative staff ERA in the pitching circle.
