UT Martin head coach Donley Canary is retiring after eighteen years as the head of the Skyhawks program.
Canary posted 581 victories during his career with the Skyhawks, the most in program history and the fourth-most all-time in the Ohio Valley Conference. Under his leadership, the Skyhawks won a pair of conference regular-season titles and a pair of OVC tournament championships.
Named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Coach of the Year on two separate occasions, in 2010 and 2012, Canary tutored a pair of players that were named the conference’s Player of the Year and saw ninety-nine of his players named all-conference selections in his eighteen seasons at the helm.
The Skyhawks reached the NCAA tournament via the conference tournament championship in 2009 and 2012, and earned an invitation to the inaugural National Invitational Softball Championship postseason tournament in 2017. The Skyhawks qualified for the OVC tournament in sixteen of Canary’s eighteen years as head coach.
Canary was an all-American baseball player at Tennessee Tech and was inducted into the Tennessee Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 1997. His position at UT Martin was the first softball coaching position of his career.
UT Martin finished the 2019 season with a 29-27 overall record, with a 10-12 mark in Ohio Valley conference play, and went 0-1 in the OVC tournament.
