TRENDING NOW: NCAA TRANSFER TRACKER / COLLEGE COACHING TRACKER
Chris Steiner is no longer the head coach at Florida International (FIU), sources confirmed to JWOS early Tuesday.
Steiner spent the last two seasons as the Panthers’ head coach, collecting a 22-35 overall record and a 6-13 conference record. The conference record during her brief tenure in Miami came during the 2021 campaign, when she assembled a 14-26 overall record that included wins over Florida Gulf Coast and New Mexico State.
Prior to her tenure at FIU, Steiner spent five seasons as the head coach at Alabama State. Under her guidance, the Hornets’ program collected a pair of SWAC championships and three postseason berths. In addition to two trips to the NCAA tournament, the Hornets also played in the NISC postseason tournament in 2017.
In addition to her tenures at FIU and Alabama State, Steiner’s resume includes time as a head coach at Auburn-Montgomery and Reinhardt College.
On social media Tuesday morning, Steiner’s longtime assistant coach Jeremy Leak wrote, “Well, it lasted longer than I expected. As of yesterday, I removed the word Coach from in front of my name. I’ve met some great folks and made a few lifelong friendships over the last 10 years. I’d like to think that I left my mark somewhere on the wall. Now I can start the next chapter in life.”
Steiner has not commented on the move; Leak and Hunter Allen both followed Steiner from Alabama State to FIU as assistant coaches. The entire “coaching staff” portion of the FIU softball website had been removed as of Tuesday morning.
