Former San Diego head coach Larry Caudillo passed away on September 10th. He was 67.
Caudillo was the first coach in program history at the Division I level, as he presided over the program during the transition up from Division III starting in 1986. He spent eight years at the helm of the program, crossing the 30-win plateau three times. He recorded 211 career victories and is the second-winningest coach in program history.
The 1991 season was the finest of Caudillo’s tenure leading the Toreros’ program, as he led the squad to 34 wins and a .708 winning percentage; the latter mark still stands as the best in program history.
Before he took over the Toreros’ softball program, Caudillo served as an assistant coach for the San Diego football team for fifteen seasons. During his tenure on the sidelines, Caudillo served in a variety of roles, including offensive coordinator and special teams coordinator. He was a former Toreros student-athlete, playing baseball and football at USD.
Since leaving the USD softball program following the 1993 season, Caudillo served as a teacher and coach at the high school level in the San Diego area. He is survived by a wife and two sons.
