Casey Shue, an officer for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department, was shot in the leg on Thursday night by a murder suspect who opened fire on a group of officers, including Shue.
According to local media reports, the shooting occurred a few minutes before 11:00 pm on Thursday night in the parking lot of the CMPD Law Enforcement Center. Shue was part of a group of approximately four to six officers who were being briefed on a case, when Jonathan Bennett, a murder suspect in another, unrelated case, allegedly drove into the lot and opened fire on the officers.
Shue was shot in the leg, while other officers returned fire on the suspect, fatally wounding him. An update on her condition was not immediately available, though the injury was said to be non-life threatening.
A member of the department since July 2014, Shue was recognized as the Officer of the Month in August 2017. Shue is assigned to the North Tryon Division Crime Reduction Unit and, at the time of her receiving the honor in August, was noted as having initiated 198 traffic stops that resulted in the seizure of six firearms and the arrest of twenty-two people, six on felony charges.
Shue led officer-initiated activities in the North Tryon Division during the summer and said at the August ceremony that she was committed to “getting out, talking to people and showing our presence” in the community.
Shue played at two-year Spartanburg Methodist College and then at UNC-Wilmington. As a member of the Seahawks from 2013-14, Shue played in 102 of her team’s 103 games, recording a .270 batting average; seventy-nine hits; and fifty-seven RBIs.
