Joe Verbanic has stepped down as the head coach at George Mason, the school announced this week.
Verbanic spent sixteen years as the Patriots’ head coach, collecting a 294-469 overall record. He led the program to a 7-12 showing during the abbreviated 2020 season.
In a university statement, Verbanic said, “It is after much prayer and thought that I believe, with all my heart, that the time has come for a new direction in my life as I resign from my position at George Mason. I am thankful for the opportunity God provided 16 seasons ago. I express my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to all the players, coaches and colleagues who made it all possible and have been there through it all. You will always be in my heart. I thank you all and expect great things.”
During his tenure, Verbanic guided the Patriots’ program through the transition from the Colonial Athletic Association to the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2013. His program produced six first-team all-conference selections over the years, while arguably his most successful year came in 2015, when his squad reached the semifinals of the A10 Championship.
Prior to taking the helm at GMU, Verbanic spent five years as an assistant at San Diego State and previously coached at the high school level.
