UPDATE 6/22/20: On Monday, Minnesota officially announced Richardson’s hiring in a press release.
ORIGINAL STORY:
Minnesota alum Katie Richardson will join the Golden Gophers’ coaching staff, sources confirmed to JWOS.
Richardson played for the Golden Gophers from 2012-15, starting every game for the program during her 4-year career. She began her playing career as the team’s starting third baseman, and moved across the diamond to play first base in the latter portion of her time in Minneapolis.
A career .388 hitter, Richardson recorded forty home runs and 179 RBIs during her time as a Gopher. She scored 145 runs during her tenure with the program, and finished her career with a .678 slugging percentage and .502 on-base percentage. She was named an All-American in both 2013 and 2014, and was a top-10 finalist for the Senior CLASS Award in ’15.
Following her collegiate playing career, Richardson played two seasons of professional softball for the Dallas Charge, and her coaching resume includes a 2-year stint on staff at Arizona State. She later spent one year working within the Ball State athletic department, during which time she entered the broadcast booth as an analyst for a number of BSU softball games.
In addition to returning to her alma mater, Richardson will also be reunited with newly-minted Gophers associate head coach Carly Wynn; the pair served as assistant coaches on staff at Arizona State during Richardson’s time in Tempe.
