Kristi Stefanoni will not return as the head coach at Massachusetts (UMass), the school announced on Thursday.
Stefanoni spent eight years as the head coach of the Minutewomen, collecting a 167-158-1 overall record and a 90-49-1 mark in Atlantic 10 conference play.
The 2021 season was Stefanoni’s 15th year on staff in Amherst, including seven years as an assistant coach under the legendary Elaine Sortino and the 2014 season when she served as interim head coach following Sortino’s passing.
Stefanoni earned Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year honors in 2018, as she led the Minutewomen to the conference’s regular-season title.
A program alum, Stefanoni played in the NCAA tournament in each of her four seasons on the Minutewomen roster, was part of three A10 championship teams, and was part of the 2006 UMass squad that advanced to the Super Regional round.
In 2021, the Minutewomen posted a 16-17 overall record and a 12-12 mark in conference play. Already playing a limited schedule due to the ongoing pandemic and related challenges, the Minutewomen also had three games on their schedule that were cancelled mid-year.
