TRENDING NOW: NCAA TRANSFER TRACKER / COLLEGE COACHING TRACKER
Samford head coach Mandy Burford-Johnson has resigned her position, the school announced late Monday.
Burfor- Johnson spent a decade as the Bulldogs’ head coach, leading the program to 237 wins during her tenure and moving atop the coaching wins list to become the program’s all-time winningest leader, a mark that she set during the 2019 season. She led the program to the NCAA tournament in 2016 as the SoCon champions.
Also named the SoCon Coach of the Year in 2016, Burford-Johnson’s squad reached the 40-win plateau that year and won both the regular-season and conference tournament crowns. During her tenure, Samford players twice earned SoCon Player of the Year honors and the team also saw one conference Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year trophies head to Birmingham.
During the 2021 campaign, the Bulldogs posted an 18-27 overall record and a 7-11 mark in SoCon play. The team did not qualify for the conference tournament, which fielded a reduced number of teams from past years. The Bulldogs last posted a winning record during the 2016 season.
Prior to her tenure at Samford, Burford-Johnson spent two years as an assistant coach at Birmingham-Southern and previously served as a radio analyst for Alabama softball broadcasts. A Crimson Tide alum, Burford-Johnson was a team captain in 2007 and led the Tide to a pair of WCWS appearances in 2005 and ’06.
