Maria Winn has joined the coaching staff at Galveston College and will serve as an assistant coach, she confirmed to JWOS on Monday evening.
Winn spent the 2020 season as the head coach at Louisiana Tech, and led the Lady Techsters to an 8-16 overall record and a 2-1 start to conference play before the COVID-19 pandemic prematurely ended the season. At the end of July, Winn announced her resignation from Louisiana Tech due to what was termed as “personal reasons.”
Prior to her stint in Ruston, Winn was a successful head coach at the junior college level. In fifteen years as the head coach at Tyler Junior College and Western Nebraska Community College, Winn collected 699 wins and made eight appearances in the NJCAA National Championship Tournament. Her teams reached the 50-win plateau seven times under her guidance, and she helmed the Regional Coaching Staff of the Year in both 2017 and ’19.
At Galveston College, Winn will serve on staff under 3rd-year head coach Christa Wallace, a Blinn College and UT-Tyler alum who also serves as the school’s athletic director. The Whitecaps owned a 3-8 on the 2020 season when the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the remainder of the campaign.
