Maryland and head coach Julie Wright have parted ways, the school announced on Wednesday evening.
Wright’s departure was termed as a “resignation” in a Maryland press release that included statements from Wright and athletic director Damon Evans. SoftballAmerica broke the news of Wright’s departure.
“While this was not an easy decision, it was the right one at this time,” Wright said in the release. “I am truly thankful for having the opportunity to be the head softball coach at Maryland the last four years. I am especially grateful for the student-athletes and staff members who dedicated so much time to the program.”
Under her original employment contract, Wright would have entered the 2020 season in the final year of her deal. The contract was signed in 2015 and reviewed by JWOS on Wednesday.
During Wright’s tenure, the Terrapins posted a 61-147-1 overall record during her four years at the program’s helm. During the 2019 season, the Terps recorded a 20-31 record with a 4-19 mark in BigĀ Ten conference play; it was the best record under Wright’s guidance.
Prior to taking over the Maryland program, Wright spent five years as the head coach at Idaho State, where she led the program to a trio of conference regular-season championships. She has also served as an assistant coach on staff at Wisconsin, Kansas, and Ohio, and as the head coach at Akron.
According to the Maryland press release, Associate Athletic Director Kristen Brown will assume responsibility for softball operations, with current assistant coaches Vicky Galasso and Tori Finucane continuing in their roles.
