North Carolina and head coach Donna Papa have agreed to a five-year contract extension.
The pact is set to run through the 2023 season and is the first multi-year contract of Papa’s career, according to a university press release.
Papa has been head coach of the Tar Heels since the late 1980s, collecting more than 1,200 wins during her tenure. She has led UNC to five ACC regular-season titles during her tenure, as well as the ACC tournament title in 2001. The Tar Heels have reached the NCAA regional round fourteen times since 2000.
Five times named the ACC Coach of the Year, Papa owns 239 career victories against conference opponents, a historic mark and the highest win total of any coach in league history. The Tar Heels hosted a Regional in 2008, a year that also saw the program hit the 50-win mark.
The contract includes an annual $10,000 raise in each year of the pact, along with bonuses for championships; postseason appearances; and ‘coach of the year’ awards.
North Carolina posted a 30-26 overall record in 2018, including a 15-8 mark in ACC play. The Tar Heels earned the #3 seed in the conference tournament and went 1-1 in the tournament, ultimately falling in a 3-0 loss to Pittsburgh.
