Michele “Micky” Gehringer, a former Nebraska-Omaha standout and Hall of Famer, passed away on June 25th at the age of 65.
Gehringer played for the Mavericks from 1972-76, leaving an indelible mark on the program. She set the program’s single-season batting average record with a .430 mark, and held the program’s career record for runs scored. The team’s batting leader in 1973 and 1974, Gehringer helped lead the Mavericks to their first Women’s College World Series championship, under the previous AIAW tournament governance, in 1975.
In 1990, Gehringer was inducted into the Omaha Athletics Hall of Fame, and currently is one of fourteen inductees associated with the Mavericks’ softball program. In addition to her career on the diamond, Gehringer also played volleyball and basketball for the Mavericks during her collegiate career.
Connie Claussen, the coach of the 1975 National Championship team and current athletic director emerita at Omaha, spoke of Gehringer in a statement released by the school: “”Micky was not only an outstanding athlete but also an outstanding person. She was always positive, always willing to help someone else, and she had a wonderful smile. She was an all-round special person of great faith, and she will be missed immensely.”
Services for Gehringer were held in Omaha on June 29th.
