A tweet from the Ouachita Athletics account officially announced McGhee’s passing, saying, “This morning Head Softball Coach Mike McGhee passed away after his fight with cancer. His love for Ouachita, his players and the lord was prominent in his time as Head Coach of the Tigers. Please remember his wife Debbie, daughter Beth, and son Ryan in these difficult times.” (sic)
McGhee had been the head coach at Ouachita Baptist for fourteen years, since 2004, and was the owner of more than 300 career victories. His assistant coach at OBU, Macy Nantz – who assumed the program’s helm in recent days prior to McGhee’s passing – was a four-year player for the program and had served on McGhee’s staff for two seasons.
Tributes poured in from various parts of the coaching world. “Mike was a great man. He will be missed,” one coach said.
Information on the arrangements for McGhee’s funeral and services was not immediately available.
