The ASun Conference, reflecting the ever-changing state of college athletics in the current times, changed their conference championship format to a 2-week affair, with the Quarterfinal round taking place this past weekend.
The league was split into two divisions for the 2021 season, the North and South portions of the conference. For the tournament, Liberty earned the #1 overall seed in the North Division and Florida Gulf Coast earned the similar seeding in the South Division. Divisional standings were used to determine solely seeding for the opening round, which also functioned as the tournament quarterfinals.
In the North Division, the full seedings included #1 Liberty, #2 Kennesaw State, #3 North Alabama, and #4 Lipscomb. In the South Division were #1 Florida Gulf Coast, #2 North Florida, #3 Jacksonville, and #4 Stetson.
Florida Gulf Coast, the top seed in the South, took care of Stetson in two games to advance to the double-elimination semifinals. Kennesaw State also handled North Alabama in two games, sending the Lions home early.
Liberty and Lipscomb split the first two games of their head-to-head series, with each team winning one of the face-offs and setting up a winner-take-all third game. Liberty took the win in game 3, and thus advanced in the tournament while Lipscomb went home.
On the South side of the bracket, Jacksonville took the 2-1 series win over North Florida after a similar winner-take-all situation went in the Dolphins’ favor and eliminated the Ospreys.
The double-elimination semifinal round will commence on Thursday and will begin with Liberty vs. Jacksonville and Florida Gulf Coast vs. Kennesaw State. A conference champion will be crowned on Saturday.
