Before the Grand Canyon Antelopes upset the #1 team in the nation last week, the program immortalized one of their own in program legend.
Former Lopes star Randi Johns Riggs earlier this month became the first-ever softball player to be inducted into the school’s athletics Hall of Fame. She was also just the 21st individual inducted in the Hall of Fame’s history.
Then known as Randi Johns, a hard-hitting infielder, Riggs began her career on the left side of the diamond before moving to first base midway through her career due to injuries. She hit over .400 in each season of her career, and was named an NCAA Independent All-American and Rookie of the Year in her freshman season.
Riggs earned all-Pac West conference honors in each of her final three seasons at Grand Canyon, including a first-team nod in 2009. She was a Division II second-team all-region selection, also in ‘09, and was three times an academic all-American.
At her career’s end, Riggs held the program’s career records in home runs (35); RBIs (249); doubles (56); and walks (89). She stands second in program history in batting average (.407); hits (264); and games played (219).
The Lopes moved to Division I in 2013, and were officially recognized as a full D1 member school in 2017.
