UAB has hired Scott Woodard as an assistant coach.
Woodard most recently served as an assistant coach at Auburn from 2013-17. He was part of the Tigers’ coaching staff that helped lead the program to back-to-back Women’s College World Series appearances in 2015 and ’16, including a national runner-up finish in 2016.
βI am absolutely thrilled to announce Scott Woodard as our next assistant softball coach at UAB,β first-year Blazers head coach Joe Guthrie said in a statement. βHe was at the top of the list of who we wanted to hire and will compliment Courtnay and I very well on our staff. Scott is known as one of the best recruiters and teachers in softball. His accomplishments at both Auburn and Arizona State speak for themselves. He will be assisting our program in all aspects of the game and we are very excited to work with him and welcome him to Birmingham.β
Prior to his tenure at Auburn, Woodard spent time on staff at Arizona State, helped lead the Sun Devils’ program to their own pair of WCWS appearances, in 2012 and 2013. ASU reached the 50-win plateau in both years.
An alumnus of Western New Mexico, Woodard spent a number of years in a variety of positions at his alma mater. At various points, he served as the program’s athletic director; head softball coach; assistant softball coach; head baseball coach; and assistant football coach. On the softball diamond, he was the WNMU’s first head coach and helped restart the program. He was elected to the Western New Mexico Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.
UAB finished the 2020 season with a 15-11 overall record. The Blazers recorded a team batting average of .259 during the abbreviated year, and posted a .332 on-base percentage as a unit.
