TRENDING NOW: NCAA TRANSFER TRACKER / COLLEGE COACHING TRACKER
The Southeastern Conference announced on Thursday that the league will allow student-athletes in all sports to transfer within the conference and be eligible to play immediately with their new team.
Ratified following a vote of the league’s school presidents and chancellors, the move officially aligns the conference with the NCAA’s April legislation that established a one-time transfer exception for student-athletes in every sport.
In the past, players that transferred from one SEC program to another were required to sit out one season at their new school. That will no longer be the case with this new policy in place.
In order to gain immediate eligibility at their new school under the SEC’s new policy, student-athletes will have to declare their intent to transfer by certain dates, which will be based on their respective sport’s season (fall/winter/spring). Softball players will have to declare their intent to transfer by July 1 to retain the immediate eligibility.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said in a conference statement, “This is an important measure to further support student-athletes throughout the Southeastern Conference. While maintaining the expectation that coaches and others avoid improper recruiting, this change will ensure that student-athletes who enroll at an SEC member institution will enjoy the flexibility afforded to other student-athletes across the nation.”
