Skylar Wallace is transferring to Florida, the school announced on Wednesday.
“This is an incredible opportunity and I am very thankful that I have found a home with the Gators.” Wallace said in a school statement. “I made plenty of great memories at Alabama and am also thankful for the opportunities I had there, but now I’m focused and ready to get to Gainesville, so I can start building relationships with my new teammates and coaches.”
Wallace’s eligibility was not immediately clear; while she would not require a waiver to play immediately at a school outside the SEC, student-athletes transferring inside the conference generally are required to sit out one year. A school release noted that Wallace is set to join the program in January, but did not reference whether she will be required to sit out.
Wallace entered the NCAA’s transfer portal in September after two years at Alabama. She was the Crimson Tide’s starting second baseman as a freshman in 2019, starting 68 games for the program. She earned a nod to the SEC’s All-Freshman team, as well as the conference’s All-Tournament Team, following the year, and was also named a third-team All-Region selection by the NFCA.
During the shortened 2020 season, Wallace served as the Tide’s starting shortstop, batting .387 in sixty-two at-bats on the year. She finished second on the team in OPS, slugging percentage, and stolen bases, and led the program in triples.
A native of Woodstock, Georgia, Wallace helped lead the U19 US women’s national team to a gold medal in the 2019 World Cup. She also batted .310 with eight runs scored and two RBI during the International Cup, helping lead the U19 team to the tournament’s bronze medal.
Florida finished the abbreviated 2020 season with a 23-4 overall record. Wallace could immediately fit into the Gators’ starting lineup at shortstop, replacing Sophia Reynoso, who elected not to utilize the NCAA’s extended eligibility waiver.
