In what was a fairly quiet offseason of head coaching moves - until a couple of high-profile changes in the winter months, at least - there have been quite a flurry of assistant's moves across the nation. Assistants receiving promotions; former players beginning their coaching careers; head coaches leaving their programs for an assistant's job at the next level; and some who left the sport altogether have combined for nearly 150 moves of various types throughout the assistant coaching ranks.
Expanding off of my appearance on the In the Circle podcast earlier this week, and presented in descending order, here are our Top 10 assistant coaching hires of the offseason.
Honorable Mention:
- Laura Messina, UMass - A young pitching coach with star quality, now at one of the game's most historic programs.
- Michael Steuerwald, Syracuse - The highly-successful professional head coach joins the Orange staff under his former pro pupil Shannon Doepking.
- Tory Cameron, Florida State - Formerly a high school baseball coach, Cameron reunites with former MiLB teammate, fellow FSU assistant Travis Wilson.
- Steve Singleton, Texas - Another former baseball coach entering the softball ranks, Singleton most recently coached in the Minnesota Twins organization.
- Laura Ricciardone, Yale - The former Harvard standout is back in the Ivy League, and it's only a matter of time before she is a head coach.
