Maryland pitching coach Tori Tysonhas been named the new head coach at Howard
Tyson spent the 2018 season as an assistant coach at Maryland, working with the Terrapins’ pitching staff in her single season in College Park. She led the staff to a 4.51 team ERA and 179 strikeouts during the season.
Prior to joining the Terrapins’ coaching staff, Tyson spent two seasons as the pitching coach at Cal State Fullerton, where she was a part of back-to-back Big West Conference championship-winning squads in 2016 and 2017. Under her tutelage in 2017, Titans pitcher Kelsey Kessler posted a 1.02 ERA in more than seventy-five innings en route to all-conference and all-region honors. Tyson also oversaw the Big West Freshman and Pitcher of the Year during the 2016 season.
In addition to the positions at Maryland and Cal State Fullerton, Tyson’s coaching resume also includes a multi-year stint at Bethune-Cookman and a stint on staff at Doane College in Nebraska. She spent the 2018 summer season as a member of the coaching staff with the Chicago Bandits in the National Pro Fastpitch league. The position at Howard will be her first-ever as a head coach.
A Nebraska graduate, Tyson was a dual-threat athlete, pitching and playing in the outfield at various times. She was a part of the 2009 Cornhuskers squad that reached the NCAA tournament’s regional round.
Howard quietly has been without a head coach for some months, following the departure of Lauren McCoy. The Bison finished the 2018 season with an 8-37 overall record, including a 6-12 mark in MEAC matchups. The squad posted a .234 team batting average with nine home runs on the year; from the pitching circle, the Bison finished the year with a 6.25 team ERA and a .343 opponent’s batting average.
